Lanai Mornings was inspired by a photograph I took during a family vacation in Wailea, Maui. I was drawn to the quiet view from the lanai—the coffee cup resting near the railing, the palm trees and golf course beyond it, and the feeling of beginning the day somewhere peaceful. I wanted to preserve that calm, unhurried moment in a layered wood painting.
I created the artwork from five individually cut layers of birch plywood. The railing, coffee cup, palm trees, golf course, foliage, and distant landscape sit at different depths, giving the scene genuine physical dimension. As the light in the room changes, the raised surfaces cast soft shadows that become part of the artwork.
I used translucent acrylic glazes so portions of the natural birch grain remain visible beneath the color. The wood grain adds warmth and texture throughout the sky, rolling greens, tropical plants, and architectural details. Hand-painted brushwork softens the precision of the laser-cut forms and gives the clouds and landscape a more natural sense of movement.
The piece is finished with custom stains and a protective varnish. It is presented in a custom-stained wood frame with engraved linear details that complement the layered construction and natural warmth of the wood.
