Lighthouse on a Rocky Shore grew from my lifelong connection to the Pacific Northwest and my love of all things water. I have always been drawn to oceans, waves, rocky shorelines, and the feeling of standing near moving water. I wanted this scene to feel windswept and full of motion, with the illuminated lighthouse providing a steady, quiet presence.
I created the artwork from four individually cut layers of birch plywood. The layered construction allows the waves, rocks, lighthouse, clouds, and surrounding landscape to sit at different depths, giving the scene genuine physical dimension. As the light in the room changes, the raised surfaces cast subtle shadows that become part of the artwork.
I used translucent acrylic glazes to add color while allowing portions of the natural birch grain to remain visible. Looser, more impressionistic brushstrokes bring movement to the ocean, sky, sea spray, and lighthouse beam. The rocks are finished with custom stains, creating a contrast between the warmth of the wood and the cooler blues of the water.
The piece is presented in a custom circular wood frame inspired by the shape of a ship’s porthole. Engraved teardrop and circular details continue the sense of movement around the outer edge while complementing the coastal subject.
